In-home Newborn Session FAQs

What should I expect?

I like to photograph families with newborns in their own home as everyone is more comfortable (and who wants to get out of the house with a newborn in tow if you can avoid it?).

When I get to your house, I would like to have a look around to see where the best lighting is in your home. We will generally use the master bedroom. If you have other children, I like to ask them to show me their bedroom/toy room so they feel important and become comfortable with me. For this session, I suggest we start with photos of your new baby with any siblings first as kids can get tired very quickly. I like to cover all combinations of people (e.g. mum with baby, dad with baby, mum and dad with baby, sibling with baby, and everyone together). It's also lovely to have some photos of you doing what you would do as a family, such as reading story books.

I try and make the experience as relaxed and enjoyable as possible and generally don't have a time limit on sessions. It's so important that you are comfortable as that is where we get the best photos.

Rather than completely "posed" photos, I tend to encourage genuine laughter and interactions. Sometimes we may play some games to get the authentic smiles, because lets face it, no-one wants photos with stiff smiles hanging on their walls!

How do I prepare the house for you?

I understand it's very overwhelming and tiring when you have a newborn in the house (been there, done that)! A general tidy up is fine, your house doesn't need to look perfect.

I do ask that you put some light coloured bedding in the master bedroom if possible. If you don't have any, just let me know and I can bring something along.

If there is a special outfit/blanket for baby please have this ready for when I get there so I can plan to include it. If you have any questions, just ask me, I am here to help you get the best out of your session x

What do I wear?

This is a question I am asked A LOT. The most important thing is that you are comfortable!

The colours should compliment each other if possible but not match exactly. If you try for neutral tones with a touch of colour that works quite well.

Things to avoid:

  • Solid black

  • Stripes

  • Baggy clothing

  • Tracksuits

  • Fluorescent clothing

Remember, this is just a guide. The most important thing is that you are comfortable! If you are unsure, just ask me and I am happy to help you out!
