Location Family Session FAQs

What should I expect?

So you're booked in for a location family session - what happens now?

Every family is different and like different settings. Some families love to spend time together down the beach and others like to run around in a forest. Whatever scene suits your family, I am sure we can make it happen!

I try and make the experience as relaxed and enjoyable as possible and generally don't have a time limit on sessions. As an idea, family sessions generally take around 1.5 hours. It's so important that you are comfortable and happy as that is how we get the best photos.

So, on the day, I will generally get to the location around half an hour earlier than our meeting time so I can have a look around and pick the best spots for your photos. Give me a call when you get there and I will come and meet you.

We will generally use 2-3 different spots at your location so there is a nice mix of backgrounds and kids don't get bored in the one place for too long.

Rather than completely "posed" photos, I tend to encourage genuine laughter and interactions. Sometimes we may play some games to get the authentic smiles, because lets face it, no-one wants photos with stiff smiles hanging on their walls!

What do I bring?

Basically bring with you what you would on a family day out. Some suggestions I have are:

  • Water bottles

  • Some clean kids snacks (ones that won't make a mess on their faces or clothes)

  • Changes of clothes and footwear for everyone (especially if we are having your session on the beach).

  • If you have a picnic rug/quilt, feel free to bring that along. If not, just let me know and I can bring one with me.

If you can bring an extra adult babysitter to watch the kids, I can get some lovely photos of you and your partner too.

What do I wear?

The most important thing is that you are comfortable! We may do a bit of walking so wear comfortable shoes (you can bring a nice pair to wear too if you like).

The colours should compliment each other if possible but not match exactly. If you try for neutral tones with a touch of colour that works quite well.

Things to avoid:

  • Solid black

  • Stripes

  • Baggy clothing

  • Tracksuits

  • Fluorescent clothing

Remember, this is just a guide. The most important thing is that you are comfortable! If you are unsure, just ask me and I am happy to help you out!
